Biography

Commissioner Calvin Hayden has long called the Sixth District, which he serves, as his home. His professional background includes 28 years of public service and public safety in law enforcement. His life focus is helping others.

 

Born in Gardner, he was raised in De Soto, graduating in 1975 from De Soto High School. He served in the United States Army Reserves for six years following his high school graduation.

 

His law enforcement career began in 1980 with the Summit County Sheriff’s Department in Summit County, Colorado where he was assigned as a detention officer. In 1981, he returned home to Johnson County, beginning a 27-year career at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.  His service included all phases of law enforcement, including the Detention Center, an undercover narcotics officer, road patrol, and dispatch. He was promoted to sergeant in 1988 and to lieutenant in 1997 where he was assigned to the Mobile Data Project. He later served as a watch commander and shift commander.

 

While serving with the Sheriff’s Office, he received numerous commendations for his service, including the “Silver Valor Award” from the Kansas City Metropolitan Chiefs Association and KMBC TV.

 

He retired from the Sheriff’s Office in June 2008. He was elected the Sixth District representative to the Johnson County Board of Commissioners in the 2008 November General Elections.

 

In addition to his law enforcement responsibilities, he has attended numerous management training courses and completed the Certified Public Manager’s course at the University of Kansas.

 

His civic mindedness has extended beyond his law enforcement career through his extensive volunteer participation on numerous public boards and organizations, including:

  • Northwest Consolidated Zoning Board (member and past  president for approximately 18 years)
  • Fire District No. 3 Advisory Board
  • Consolidated Rural Water District No. 6 Advisory Board
  • De Soto Youth Baseball Association

He also is a member of the Lenexa Masonic Temple, De Soto Baptist Church, Kansas Certified Public Manager’s Association, and the Kansas and National Sheriff’s Associations.

 

A resident of rural Johnson County near De Soto, he and his wife, Kelly, have five children.
