BIOGRAPHY
Commissioner Douglas E. Wood is currently serving his third term as the elected representative of Johnson County’s Fifth District. As a resident of Johnson County for more than 35 years, Wood proudly serves communities that support and border a significant portion of the I-35 corridor. First elected in 1998, Wood served a one-year term as chairman of the Board of County Commissioners in 2001, prior to the adoption of Johnson County’s Home Rule Charter. During his tenure, he has focused his efforts on enhancing fiscal accountability, identifying and properly funding core county services, and ensuring family-friendly policies in the county’s juvenile corrections programs. As a member of the County Commission, Wood serves as a member of the Mid-America Regional Council’s Total Transportation Policy Committee, the Kansas Workforce Investment Board, and the Public Safety and Justice Committee of the National Association of Counties.

Wood received his juris doctorate degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and has been a practicing attorney in the state of Kansas for more than three decades. His professional endeavors have also included serving as a Kansas real estate broker, and being the former co-owner of Respite Care, an adult day care facility.

Throughout his career, Wood has been an active member of the local and regional business community as well as a dedicated volunteer for charitable and civic initiatives. He has served on the board of directors for the Olathe Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Lenexa and Overland Park chambers of commerce, the Kansas and Johnson County Bar Associations, and the Kansas Association of Counties. In addition, Wood has a record of service to the Masonic Lodge AF & AM No. 34, Advise and Aid Pregnancy Center, Santa Fe Rotary, Abdullah Shrine, and the Fort Scott Scottish Rite. By gubernatorial appointment, Wood served as a public member, vice chair, and chair during his four year tenure with the Kansas Behavioral Science Regulatory Board (the state board that regulates the psychologists, mental health psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and other counselors).

Wood and his wife of more than 36 years, Margo, reside in east Olathe. Margo is a registered nurse at Olathe Medical Center. Together they have raised three daughters in Johnson County, and are the proud grandparents of five grandchildren.

The insight and experiences of elected office and community service have afforded Wood a greater understanding of the critical issues that are important to his constituents and the communities of Johnson County.
