I am proud to welcome you to the Third District of Johnson County, a good place to call home which I have done since 1979. It’s a district with many good things to enjoy, good people to meet, good events to attend, and good places to go.
The Korean War Veterans Memorial at the southwest corner of 119th Street and Lowell Avenue is one of those good things to appreciate and good places to visit in the Third District.
Since its dedication on September 30, 2006, the memorial has become one of our state’s most attractive and important attractions. It features curving red granite walls centered by a hill of boulders, shrubs, and trees along with a waterfall. A Wall of Honor is inscribed with the names of 415 Kansans killed in the Korean War and the names of two Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. The site includes paving stones with the names of veterans from the Korean War, Vietnam War, and World War II along with the names of supporters of the memorial. Future plans will add a bronze sculpture of a soldier standing over the grave of a fallen comrade.
The city of Overland Park currently is preparing a website link about the memorial. I will gladly provide access to that link as soon as it becomes available.
Other landmarks in the Third District include theOverland Park Arboretum, the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, and theTomahawk Ridge Community Center, which is adjacent to the Korean War Veterans Memorial.
The Third District spans the city of Spring Hill and the southern portions of Overland Park and Leawood and blankets the unincorporated community of Stilwell and the Aubry, Oxford, and Spring Hill townships. The district encompasses 31 schools within the Blue Valley and Spring Hill school districts, including Blue Valley Northwest, West, Academy, and High Schools, along with Spring Hill High School. It is a district that is characterized by vibrant business districts, open green space and parks, and many beautiful neighborhoods and homes.
The Third District is one of the most diverse and fastest growing areas in Johnson County. In fact, it’s one of the most diverse and fastest growing areas in the entire Kansas City metropolitan area and even throughout the Midwest. It accounts for a significant portion of the entire county’s impressive annual growth rate, which has vaulted Johnson County to the top-ranked county in the state of Kansas. But this growth presents a good number of challenges as well.
One of the significant challenges we are aggressively tackling and overcoming right now is the development of new community infrastructure. Roads, bridges, sewers, land use plans, zoning, the construction of new public facilities, and the acquisition of additional parkland and open green spaces. These and many other related issues continue to confront those families and businesses who call the Third District their home.
Successfully addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches and partnerships between local municipalities, businesses and private sector industries, civic and philanthropic organizations, the faith community, our neighborhood groups, and many, many others. These critical capital investments in our community’s infrastructure will ensure that the Third District remains a desirable, well-planned locale that attracts new residents and businesses in the years to come.
As the Third District Commissioner since 2002, my interactive website is always available so you can review my efforts in effectively representing the needs and interests of the district, my performance as a member of the Board of County Commissioners, and my service to my constituents.
I appreciate your interest in and interaction with Johnson County Government, and encourage you to actively engage with your community. That’s because I believe that, working together, we can and do make a positive difference in the development and quality of life that define our community.
My job is to represent the needs, interests, and priorities of my constituents, which includes portions of Leawood and Overland Park and the southeastern unincorporated areas that include the Aubry and Oxford townships.
I am here to advocate for you, to hear your concerns and suggestions, and to keep you informed about what your county government is doing for you. I invite and welcome your comments, and thank you for the opportunity to serve you!
