MEMBERSHIP
The Transportation Future Focused Forum membership has been developed through direct inquiry and self initiated selection by concerned citizens and stakeholders. A wide variety of stakeholders and affected audiences were identified and requested to participate in this initiative, including representatives from each of Johnson County's 20 cities, every chamber of commerce, and several organizations representing special populations with a vested interest in our county's transportation present and future condition. CONCEPT
During the annual State of the County Address on March 29, 2005, Johnson County Chairman Annabeth Surbaugh announced the creation of six task forces, or Future-Focused Forums, to focus on future-oriented, policy-level issues facing the Johnson County community. Each of these task-forces will focus on a specific area and will work to develop goals and objectives to accomplish within that area for consideration by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). In addition, each task-force is headed by one commissioners, who will serve as the chair and who will, in that capacity, be responsible for the work program of his or her task force, including calling meetings, developing agendas, and supervising the preparation reports to the BOCC.

Chairman Surbaugh has selected me to lead the Transit and Transportation future-focused forum. This forum will focus on issues related to future transportation planning issues. Transit issues are a major concern that faces our community which can only be successfully addressed through collaborative exchanges with stakeholders throughout our community and the metropolitan area.

The safe and efficient movement of people and goods is critical to our community. Throughout my seven-year tenure on the Shawnee City Council and today as Second District Commissioner, I have a strong commitment to maintaining and improving community and regional transportation. While on the council I worked closely with the Mid-America Regional Council’s (MARC) Total Transportation Policy Committee (TTPC) and Transit Committee, where I continue to serve today as the BOCC liaison to the committee. As a councilmember I was also a leader in developing Shawnee’s nationally recognized bicycle network.

MY INITIAL FOCUS
In advance of determining the membership of the Transit and Transportation Future-Focused Forum I have developed a tentative framework that can serve as the initial framework for future strategies and outcomes in the areas of transit and transportation in Johnson County and the region:

1) What problems and issues currently exist in the area of public transit and transportation?
2) Where do we want to be, what do we want to look like in 5, 10, 15 years?
3) What is or can be Johnson County’s role in defining this future vision?

QUESTIONS?
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, ideas or concerns regarding the Transit and Transportation Future-Focused Forum.
