ABOUT THE TASK FORCE

The task force was formed at the request of Johnson County Chairman Annabeth Surbaugh during the annual State of the County Address on March 29, 2005, where she announced the creation of six task forces.

The objective of the Environmental Task Force is to improve air quality by reducing the emissions from Johnson County that cause ozone (smog) pollution in the Kansas City region. Four goals were set by the task force. They were:

  • To provide opportunities for community input on environmental issues and initiatives facing the region;

  • To provide opportunities for community input on environmental issues and initiatives facing the County and the Kansas City region;

  • To encourage individual governments, businesses and citizens within Johnson County to assume leadership roles in protecting natural resources;

  • To advise the Board of County Commissioners and the County's agencies about environmental policies and programs of importance to the community; and,

  • To foster a broader awareness and better understanding about natural resource issues and the programs in place and opportunities to protect those resources
