Over the last 18 months, a committed group of local elected officials, business representatives, and community group members contributed their time and knowledge to assist the Mid-America Regional Council in developing a Clean Air Action Plan for the Kansas City Region. These people invested themselves in this process because they recognized that now is the time to take serious steps to cleaner air. Not next year. Not five years from now. Today. Because every year there are a number of days when our children, our elderly, and our friends and neighbors who suffer from asthma, chronic bronchitis and other respiratory diseases, have to breathe air that does not meet federal health-based standards. This is unacceptable, and we can and should do better for them.
